The invention relates to a process for taking samples from a bath of molten metal, which metal, in particular cast iron, is brittle in the solidified state: a sample of molten metal is taken 3 from a mould comprising a pocket with a channel for connection to a tube and a thinner chamber extending the pocket laterally over its perimeter (step A); the metal is left to harden in the mould, then the mould is empied to obtain a sample 4 having a thick part bordered by a thinner part (step B); these thick 5 and thin 10 parts are separated 7, 9, 11 from each other (steps C, D); the thin part is ground 12, 14 (step G) and the pieces with predetermined sizes are collected (step H); and analyses are performed on the said pieces of predetermined size (step I), while the thick part is used for other analyses (step F). <IMAGE>
