Process is used for the heat treatment of work pieces with and without a content of iron in a furnace chamber using a carrier gas consisting predominantly of inert gas and reaction gas. The compsn. of the carrier gas is regulated in accordance with the atmosphere occurring inthe furnace chamber. The carrier gas is mixed on the gaseous state from the inert gas and the reaction gas in a metering unit. This is introduced into the furnace chamber, and before or during its entry into the latter it is passed over a catalyst.
