PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound useful as perfumes, agricultural chemicals, etc., in high seletivity, by carbonylating a styrene compound with an aliphatic alcohol, carbon monoxide and oxygen in the presence of a specific catalyst system under specific condition. CONSTITUTION:A cinnamic acid ester is produced by reacting the styrene compound of formula (R<1> is H, halogen, etc.; R<2> is H or 1-6C alkyl) (e.g. styrene, beta-methylstyrene, etc.) with a 1-4C aliphatic alcohol, carbon monoxide, and oxygen in the presence of (A) palladium metal or its compound, (B) a salt of copper or iron, and (C) a salt of alkali metal or alkaline earth metal. The reaction is carried out keeping the partial pressure of CO in the reaction system between 0.1kg/cm<2>G and 7kg/cm<2>G, and keeping the ratio of the CO partial pressure to the O2 partial pressure to 1.0-2.5. |
