The mechanism is for a multi-spindle lathe of the kind comprising a number of spindles mounted in a spindle drum and for receiving respective workpieces. Indexing device for the drum brings the spindles in succession to a selected position. A tool carrier is associated with the selected position and has a body arranged to be secured on the lathe. The mechanism comprises a stepping motor for adjusting the part relative to the body. An electrical control device supplies signals to the motor. The signals are representative of tool wear and also of any deviation in the positions of the respective spindles when located at the selected position.
