Apparatus for adding alloying or reactive material, such as titanium, magnesium or manganese, to molten metal under a vacuum, contained in a crucible, ladle or furnace, comprises a bell-shaped enclosure 10, formed from an alumina or magnesite castable ceramic, which may be lowered into the molten metal, and which is provided with an aluminium or iron sheet metal bottom 12 which will dissolve in the molten metal to release the additive material. The ratios of the cross-sectional areas of the molten metal receptacle and the enclosure is preferably between 2À5 to 1 and 3À1 to 1. Sealable vents 14 may be provided in the enclosure, to vent off any gas released. |
