In order to operate a contact device having at least one contact pole which can be switched over between two stationary contacts, the contact pole is mounted on a permanent magnet which is supported in a moving manner. The permanent magnet is prestressed in a neutral switching position, preferably by spring force, in which neutral switching position the contact pole is located between the stationary contacts. The permanent magnet can be moved out of its neutral switching position, in a contact-free manner, by means of an operating magnet, so that the contact pole of said permanent magnet selectively comes into contact with one of the stationary contacts.
