1,244,355. Determination of prothrombin time; controlling mixing by viscosity. XEROX CORP. 14 Oct., 1968 [20 Oct., 1967], No. 48547/68. Headings B1C and B1X. Apparatus for use in determining the prothrombin time of a blood sample comprises a container 10 (Fig. 4) for the sample and for reagents, for example thromboplastin and calcium chloride originally stored in solid or liquid form in upper reagent storage chambers (20) (Fig. 2), a freely movable ferromagnetic member 24 in the container, a magnetic field source which may comprise magnet 100, means for example motor 94 for producing relative movement between the magnetic field source and the container, the intensity of the field source being such that on clotting of the sample its increased resistance causes relative movement of the ferromagnetic member 24 and the magnetic field source, and means which may comprise coil 104 rotating with magnet 100 and connected to slip-rings 106, 108 for producing a signal in response to the relative movement. In automatic operation, introduction of a metered amount of sample from a sample storage tape of the kind disclosed in Specification 1,218,747 or from a circular sample conveyor into a container 10 starts a timer and the end-point signal stops the timer, the prothrombin time for the sample being stored in a data storage device for read out when desired (Fig. 3 not shown).
|
