A pattern recognition apparatus comprises: a reference memory (26) for storing data derived fro reference patterns Figure 3B, each having a plurality of contour line segments 01-09; a microprocessor (20) which detects a contour line of an input pattern Figure 3A, divides it into a plurality of contour line segments 51-59, determines a plurality of numeric attributes for each segment, and stores them in a segment memory (24); and a matching section (30) for comparing the input pattern data with data from one of the reference patterns for verification purposes. The verifying process in the matching section (30) includes a step of comparing the data representing the segments of the input pattern with the data representing the segments of one of the reference patterns.
