PURPOSE:To produce the titled fiber containing concentrically arranged graphite or carbon layers convertible easily to graphite, containing metal in the fiber and having high electrical and thermal conductivity, by adding a specific amount of an organometallic compound to a hydrocarbon and thermally decomposing at a high temperature. CONSTITUTION:A hydrocarbon (e.g. benzene) is added with >=5wt% organometallic compound. The mixture is introduced into a reaction tube using hydrogen gas as the carrier gas and decomposed by heating at 400-3,000 deg.C to obtain the objective carbon fiber having a metal content of 0.03-5wt%, a fiber diameter of 0.01-4mu and an aspect ratio (length/diameter ratio of fiber) of >=100, and containing graphite layers or carbon layers convertible easily to graphite and arranged concentrically parallel to the fiber axis. The organometallic compound is preferably a cyclopentadienyl compound, beta-diketone complex, carbonyl compound, beta-ketocarboxylic acid ester, etc., of a transition metal such as iron, nickel, cobalt, etc.
