(I) derivs. substd. at the 7-position position with an OH or ether gp. are prepd. by (a) coupling 3-methyl-but-1-yne or the 3-hydroxy or ether substd. deriv with a 5C coupling reagent having the configuration (where X is Cl, Br, I, tosylate or mesylate, R is OCOR' or OR' R is 1-5C alkyl up to 10C opt. substd. phenyl, or up to 10C aralkyl or cycloalkyl) in the presence of a cuprous salt and an acid scavenger and (b) subjecting the prod. to hydrogenation and saponification or ether cleavage to convert the ester or ether gp. in the 1-position to an OH gp. The prods. are used in perfume compsns. and as intermediates for other perfumes (I) and ether derivs. are inters in the synthesis of juvenile hormones.
