Prodn. of a mixt. of HOAc and glyoxal is effected by (a) contacting synthesis gas with a Rh catalyst in the presence of at least one Mg, Mn, La, rare earth, Sc, Y, W, Fe, Zr, Cr, Hf, Pt and/or U cpd. as promoter and at least one alkali metal cpd. as activator; (b) condensing the reaction prod.; and (c) oxidising the aq. phase of the condensate with HNO3.
