Self-adhesive plastic compound for shielding radioactive radiation, characterised by a content of lead oxide and a plastic polymer. The content of lead oxide is 50 to 99 per cent by weight, it being possible to replace a part of or the entire lead oxide with PbO2, Pb3O4 and/or depleted uranium in oxidic form. The production of the compound according to the invention is carried out by incorporating the lead oxide in a kneader into the plastic polymer. Preferably the lead oxide and, if required, filler are incorporated into a prebatch of plastic polymer, solvent and aluminium stearate. The compound according to the invention resembles modelling clay in composition, can be readily plastically deformed and, despite its high specific weight, has an adequate adhesion. It provides big advantages especially in the shielding of problematical locations in nuclear installations, for example as part of maintenance and repair work. Compared with conventional shielding materials (usually lead mats) the compound according to the invention is distinguished by its simple application, its good adaptability to the respective shape of the location to be shielded and its possible reusability at any desired location.
