The brake reel has a drum mounted on an axle which is driven by a crank. The axle has a primary brake formed by pairs of discs engaged between a fixed part of the casing and a compression spring with a preloader. - A second brake for the reel has a lever arm connected to an actuating arm for moving the discs in opposition to the compression spring. The free end of the actuating arm is positioned between the fixed part of the housing and the adjacent disc.
