A motor-operated portable appliance for a rotating and/or percussive tool, in particular a drilling machine, a percussive drilling machine, a machine for screwing in and unscrewing screws, a machine for screwing on and unscrewing nuts or the like. The appliance has a housing of elongated configuration enclosing the drive device. The drive spindle for the tool is arranged on the front end of the housing parallel to the longitudinal direction of the appliance or the housing. The opposite rear end of the housing is designed for seizing and holding the appliance with the hand. So that the appliance lies comfortably in the hand and can be both reliably guided and, if necessary, pressed forward with great force using one hand, a holding projection, which can be taken hold of by one finger, preferably the index finger, projects essentially perpendicularly upwards on the rear housing end. The rear housing end can be put into the hand in extension of the drive spindle, the thumb bearing on one side of the housing and the other fingers bearing on the opposite side of the housing, the index finger conveniently enclosing the holding projection.
