[Also in Division C3] Pressure sensitive adhesive tapes are prepared by coating a backing material, e.g. paper or plastic film which may carry conventional primer and/or release coatings, with an organic solvent solution of a copolymer of (a) a major proportion by weight of C 4-12 alkyl acrylate, (b) 2 to 20 per cent by weight of a substituted acrylamide of formula where R is H or -CO(CH 2 ) n CH 2 where n is 0 to 10, (c) 0.5 to 5.0 weight per cent of maleic anhydride and (d) 0.005 to 0.4 weight per cent of a cross-linking monomer having anunsaturated terminal group, together with a crosslinking. catalyst such as an organic metallic salt or a strong acid. The copolymer may also contain a short chain cohesion inducing monomer, e.g. vinyl acetate, methyl acrylate or methyl methacrylate. Preferred acrylamides are N-t-butyl and N-diacetone acrylamides. The cross-linking monomer may be an alkoxysilyl compound, e.g. 3-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxy silane. In examples polyethylene terephthalate films are coated with ethyl acetate/ isopropanol/acetone solutions of copolymers of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, maleic anhydride and 3-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane together with (I and III) methyl acrylate and diacetone acrylamide, (II) methyl acrylate and t-butyl acrylamide, (IV and VI to VIII) vinyl acetate and diacetone acrylamide and (V) vinyl acetate and t-butyl acrylamide, together with a toluene solution of dibutyl tin bis (2- ethylhexoate) as catalyst. |
