[Also in Division F2] In an energy absorbing bumper assembly a backing member 14, mounted on a portion of the vehicle 12, defines with a resiliently deformable shell 20 and resiliently deformable separator means 40, 42 a series of individual pneumatic chambers 48, at least one of which is vented to the atmosphere by means of a valve 52 (Fig. 3, not shown) mounted in an aperture in the backing member 14, the separators being positioned on the backing member by indentations formed by grooved brackets such as 44, 46. The shell and separator members may be formed integrally as shown, or may be formed from separate parts joined by tongue and groove means (Fig. 5, not shown). The indentations may be provided by grooves (70, Fig. 4, not shown) in the backing member itself. |
