PURPOSE:To enable the amount of hydrogen gas generation to be suppressed with a decreased amount of mercury harmful to the human body to such a degree as to be equal to that achieved by the usual amount of mercury by using a mercury-thallium-zinc alloy as an active material. CONSTITUTION:A mercury-thallium-zinc alloy is used as an active material. For example, after 2.5g of thallous nitrate is added to 500ml of water before the mixture is agitated to make a solution, 500g of zinc powder is added to the solution before it is well agitated for 10min. At this point, thallium adhering to the surfaces of the zinc particles is gradually converted into a thallium-zinc alloy from the surface of the particle. Next, the solution is subjected to filtration before the filtration product is dried at 70 deg.C to obtain a thallium-zinc alloy powder. After the thus obtained thallium-zinc alloy powder is added to 500ml of 20wt% aqueous amalgamated-potassium solution, 7.0g of mercury is added and then the mixture is well agitated for 30min before the amalgamation product is washed with water until the pH of the water used for the washing becomes about 7. After that, the amalgamation product is subjected to vacuum drying at 40 deg.C, thereby producing a mercury-thallium-zinc alloy powder. |
