PURPOSE:To obtain a hydrogen electrode with a prolonged life by pressing and fixing to a base body, both a porous PTFE film and a catalyst layer consisting of a mixture composed of a platinum-containing carbon catalyst and a specified amount of PTFE. CONSTITUTION:A porous polytetrafluoroethylene film and a catalyst layer which consists of a mixture composed of a platinum-containing carbon catalyst and 15-25wt% of polytetrafluoroethylene, are pressed and fixed to a base body. For example, after 100g of a carbon black catalyst powder containing 20wt% of platinum is combined with 29.4g of a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) dispersion, the mixture is well kneaded to convert the PTFE into fibers before being dried and subjected to thermal treatment at about 270 deg.C which is below the melting point of PTFE. Next, the thus obtained mixture body is pulverized before the pulverized material is packed into a base body consisting of a metallic nickel net of 50 mesh to form a catalyst layer containing 15wt% of PTFE. After that, a PTFE film with a mean hole diameter of 5mu is pressed and fixed to the catalyst layer to make a hydrogen electrode 1 of 0.22mm. thickness. |
