The method involves the capture of solar energy. A converging optical system 1 forms a luminous spot 5 at the surface of the object 2 to be heated. The surface has a thermally insulating reflecting coating 3 which disappears at the position of the spot 5, producing a window 4 through which energy exchange can take place. The window, being coincident with the spot 5, moves with the spot as the sun moves across the sky. The reflecting coating 3 may consist of a metallic layer which is vaporised at the position of the spot 5 and is then deposited once more on the object 2, reconstituting the reflecting coating where it was before being displaced. The method makes it possible to dispense with a device for tracking the sun. <IMAGE>
