PURPOSE:To make it possible to perform printing by using only an indicated colorant while making it possible to perform various printings, by providing a bar code to a thermal transfer ribbon corresponding to the color of ink and discriminating said bar code. CONSTITUTION:In an apparatus main body 1, a ribbon storing part 7 for storing a roll shaped thermal transfer ribbon 6 as a transfer material in a deliverable state and a ribbon wind-up part 8 for successively winding up the thermal transfer ribbon delivered from the ribbon storing part 7 are provided. For example, a discriminating code, for example, a bar code 201 comprising four bits is provided to one side part of the thermal transfer ribbon 6. This bar code 201 is constituted of light pervious parts 202 and light impervious parts 203 each of which has a width l3 from a position separated from the boundary of each color of the thermal transfer ribbon 6 over l2 at pitches l1 and detected by a ribbon detector 201 to discriminate the color of ink. The bar code applied to each ink ribbon is different at every kind of the thermal transfer ribbon 6 in a certain color even if a same color. |
