In a method for monitoring the thread tension of at least one elastic thread which is wound on a carrier with a set thread tension for further processing, the set thread tension is determined before and during the winding operation with the aid of a light barrier (9, 10) by measuring the diameter of the elastic thread (4) using the attenuation of the beam. The diameter depends on the thread tension and the measurement obtained is compared in each case with a specified diameter value allotted to said thread tension. The result of the comparison is evaluated in an evaluation circuit (25 to 43) which contains a microcomputer (28) and a gated peak-value detector circuit (40) in which the individual infrared laser reception signals are rectified and are converted into direct-voltage stepped signals, in particular in phase with the laser signals. <IMAGE>
