PURPOSE:To obtain a distinct display even if backlight is weak by using extraordinary light as incident light to a negative display liquid crystal display body of transmission type utilizing a twisted nematic (TN) effect thereby increasing a contrast ratio and decreasing the light leakage in the background part. CONSTITUTION:A nematic liquid crystal 4 having positive dielectric anisotropy is used between an upper glass base plate 1 and a lower glass plate 2 subjected to a horizontal orientation treatment and is preliminarily twisted 90 deg. between the upper and lower base plates. The polarizing axis 7 of a polarizing plate 6 for the plate 2 is made parallel with the orienting direction of the liquid crystal molecules in contact with the plate 2 and the light from a lower light source 5 is made incident as extraordinary light to the liquid crystal layer. A polarizing plate 8 is provided to the plate 1 by setting the polarizig axis 8 thereof in the same direction as the polarizing axis of the plate 6 so that a negative display can be made. The distinct and good looking display having the higher contrast than the contrast of the conventional negative display utilizing ordinary light is thus obtd. |
