Unit for monitoring a welding process taking place into a working area by means of a television camera arranged outside the working area and an optical filter arranged in front of the camera to weaken the radiation emanating from the working area, an illumination device being preferably provided to lighten the working area with a lighting power sufficient to enable a television image to be produced when the welding process is not in operation, the unit being characterized in that the filter is transparent substantially only in an infra-red spectral range and in that the camera is sensitive within said spectral range.
