In the case of a sounding board of sandwich construction for musical instruments, for example pianos, the use of a core of a greater shearing modulus of elasticity and/or a smaller shearing loss tangent than that of the front and rear panels has the effect of ensuring a small shearing loss in the higher tonal range, thereby greatly improving the overall tone balance over all tonal ranges.
