GRANULATION OF DRY ICE AND ICE MIXTURE AND DEVICE THEREFOR

PURPOSE:A mixture of dry ice and a liquid which is prepared by spraying the liquid into liquefied CO2 is compressed for granulation whereby particles of dry ice-ice mixture of smooth surfaces and a long life. CONSTITUTION:Liquefied CO2 is led from the tank 2 through pump 3 to snowmaker 1 and sprayed downward from the top of the maker 1. At the same time, the water in the tank 4 is sent through a high-pressure pump 5 inside the snow- maker 1 and jetted downward from the lower position than the CO2 spraying so that the water jet is covered with atomized liquid CO2. A part of the liquefied CO2 is expanded adiabatically and the vaporization heat and sublimation heat are utilized to form snow 6 as a mixture of dry ice and ice, then the resultant snow is granulated. Thus, the dry ice is coated with ice on its surface to have luster and hardness enough to be used for polishing.
