The mixing unit has a mixing vessel (8) and, arranged therein along its longitudinal axis and at least approximately horizontally, a rotatably mounted mixer shaft (7). Provided between its ends on the one hand and its longitudinal centre on the other hand there is one group (A, B) each having equal numbers of ploughs (1 to 3, and 4 to 6, respectively), having at least three of these. The ploughs (1 to 6) are each held, by an arm (12, 13) projecting from the mixer shaft (7), at equal radial distances from the latter, the effective direction of the ploughs (1 to 3, and 4 to 6, respectively) of the one group (A) being opposed to that of the other group (B). In order to achieve, for a constant mixing time and independent of the filling level, good mixing accuracy it is provided that the ploughs (1 to 6) are arranged around the mixer shaft's longitudinal axis, in such a way that, seen in the direction of the mixer shaft's longitudinal axis, each plough (1 to 6) is situated, symmetrically with respect to the axis, in a circular sector whose sector angle ( alpha ) is 360 DEG divided by the number of ploughs (1 to 6), the ploughs being arranged in such a way that, as the mixer shaft (7) rotates, a plane (17) containing the mixer shaft's longitudinal axis is alternately crossed by a plough of the one group (A) and then by a plough of the other group (B). <IMAGE>
