PURPOSE:To enable to protect and smoothly start a main circuit by composing a thyristor bridge of a converter of an AC power source side, and gradually shifting the bridge from a gate block state to a power reacting operation. CONSTITUTION:A converter 1A is operated as a power reactor in a power drive mode, and a converter 1A is operated as a power inverter in a regenerative mode. A counterelectromotive force generated by the rotary energy of an AC motor 4 in the regenerative mode is inputted to the polarity corresponding to the converter 1A inverted by the operation of a polarity converter 12, and regenerated to an AC power source AC. The phase control of the converter 1A is performed in a phase shifter 8. The converter 1A is shifted gradually from a gate block state to the power reacting operation by the output of the phase shifter 8 when a power source is turned ON.
