<p>To provide enhanced modulation of an optical signal a Fabry-Perot resonator comprising a waveguide (31) and a plurality of mirrors (32, 33) is modified by the inclusion of a plurality of modulating electrodes (34, 35) to which a modulation voltage signal may be applied. Thus resonance intensified optical signals may be modulated by electro-optic effects. Other embodiments include modulators having a plurality of modulating electrode pairs to take advantage of higher orders of resonance of the Fabry-Perot cavity and single side-bend modulators utilising birefringence effects to cross couple differently polarised optical signals. One way transmission and isolator functions may also be provided.</p> |
