This starter comprises an electric motor 1 which rotationally drives, directly or via a reducer 7, 8 a starting device 12 with a gear 13 which is moved axially in order to be brought into engagement with a ring gear 14 of the engine to be started. The axial movement of the starting device 12 is controlled by an electromagnetic actuator 17, via a flexible connecting cable which connects the movable core 20 of the actuator to a washer 28 carried by the driver 15 of the starting device, passing over a return pulley 25. A "tooth against tooth" spring 32 may be associated with the pulley 25, the latter being movably mounted. <IMAGE>
