Chromogenic quinazoline compds. of formula (I) are new. In the formula, Z is H, R1, -OR1, -SR1 or -NR2R3; Y is of formula (1a) or (1b); R is C1-3 alkyl; R1 is C1-4 alkyl, methoxyethyl, benzyl, phenyl, methoxyphenyl, chlorophenyl, nitrophenyl, naphthyl or pyridyl; R2 and R3 are methyl, phenyl, or NR2R3 being morpholyl; and X1 and X2 are C1-3 alkyl, phenyl or -NX1X2 being piperidyl. (I) are useful as color formers in heat- or pressuresensitive recording materials. Improved color intensity and light fastness are obtd.
