Catalyst for the polycondensation in an initially anhydrous medium of a phenol component and an aldehyde component in an aldehyde/phenol molecular ratio which is generally greater than 1, characterised in that the catalyst is chosen from among the tertiary amines which exhibit an electrical conductivity measured in pure ordinary phenol at 60 degrees C and for a molar concentration of 0.838% amine in relation to the phenol which is greater than 150.10**-8 OMEGA**-1 m**-1 , and which comprise at least two tertiary amine groups, the said catalyst being used at s temperature in excess of 50 degrees C and at a concentration which is at least equal to 8 moles catalyst to 10,000 moles phenol component.
