<p>PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound useful as a raw material for the synthesis of polymers, etc., easily, in high yield by reacting a 2-acyloxybiphenyl compound with an acyl halide, etc. in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, and hydrolyzing the reaction product. CONSTITUTION:A 2- or 4-acyloxybiphenyl compound of formula I [R is (substituted) alkyl, (substituted) alkenyl or (substituted) aryl] is made to react with the acyl halide of formula R'COX (R' is R or halogen; X is halogen) or an acid anhydride, in an inert solvent in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, and the resultant 2- or 4-acyloxy-substituted 4'-acylbiphenyl compound of formula IIis hydrolyzed in a solvent preferably in the presence of an alkali to obtain the objective 2- or 4-hydroxy-substituted 4'-acylbiphenyl compound.
