According to a process, protective plies for belt replacement in the retreading of vehicle tyres or for repair patches which are given an internal reinforcement of fibres, for example of glass fibres can be produced. To this end, a fibre quantity of 10-20 % by weight is blended into a rubber compound which is vulcanisable to highly elastic rubber material with a hardness of approximately 70 Shore-A, while the rubber compound is moulded or rolled out in a pressing device, such as for example a roll device, to form sheet material. The unvulcanised protective plies are used instead of damaged and therefore removed belts of tyre carcasses or for belt covering or for stiffening the carcass in the bead region or as starting material for patch production. After vulcanisation in the pressurised chamber at a temperature of approximately 90 DEG C and a pressure of 5 bar, the protective plies have increased tensile strength, a reduction in the elongation as well as an increase in modulus and in rebound resilience.
