A method is proposed for braking three-phase motors (asynchronous motors or synchronous motors) which results in a shorter run-on time of the rotor than known braking methods. This is achieved according to the invention in that the motor winding can be electrically isolated from two of the three phases supplying it, and a braking capacitor, which is charged via a rectifier which is electrically connected thereto upstream of the isolating point of the phase and whose other pole is conductively connected to the winding connection which is still connected to the voltage, is subsequently connected to one of the winding connections which has no supply in a manner which allows the phase to be identified.
