Apparatus and method of using it, in which acoustic pick-ups (M1 to M5) orientated towards a welding or cutting-off point (5) are arranged and the welding noise is subjected to continuous spectrum analysis in a control device (2), and characteristic variables sensitive to certain process parameters are evaluated and are supplied to the control system of the supply device (1), the controllers (R) for the gases, the proportioning means (D) for the weld filler (PS), the feed (MZ) for the electrode (Z) and/or the means (Mx, My, Ma) for positioning the gun (3) relative to the workpiece (4). The evaluation is supplemented by time and spatial correlation of the acoustic measurements or of the spectral measured values to form process parameters, e.g. current (I), voltage (U), positioning (SPos). Examples of various welding and cutting-off methods are specified. <IMAGE>
