Connected underground in between a water branch line (2) and a service line (3) is a tapping fitting, such as a ball cock (1). It is operated by a pole wrench (5) with wrench shaft (6) and coupling piece (7), which are surrounded by a shaft casing (8) with casing tube (9), bottom part (10) and cap (11). A square end of the wrench shaft (6) protrudes out of the cap (11) and is enclosed by a wrench thimble (32) of a pole wrench (31). At the bottom, the wrench shaft (6) is connected to a coupling sleeve (17), which is seated in a non-tilting and rotatable manner on a casing attachment of the ball cock housing (19). This housing is enclosed in a rotationally fixed manner by the bell-like bottom part (10) of the casing tube (9) which, like the cap (11), has a square cross-section. The rotational position of the wrench shaft (6) with respect to the cap (11) defines the setting of the ball cock (1). The wrench shaft (6) indicates the open position of the ball cock at the cap, for instance by the relative setting between square corners or square diagonals. Such diagonals, determined by axial planes, can be brought into alignment, at least in the closed position. On the cap (11) there can be marked a sector area extending for instance over 90 DEG , if appropriate a scale, which indicates the degree of opening directly. <IMAGE>
