The antigen etc. is bound by the formation of a complex to a specific enzyme-labelled anti antibodies in soln. Smaller microorganisms or cells are bound to inert particles. The soln. is then named through a filter which retains the complex bound particles and microorganisms or cells but allows through the unbound specific enzyme labelled anti antibodies. The filtered soln. is brought into contact with a specific substrate which breaks down the enzyme labelled anti antibodies to a colourable product for detection. The sample is introduced into the upper chamber where the antigen etc. lands onto the enzyme labelled bodies and inert substance. The membrane is then broken and the solution passes to the filter. The uncomplexed specific enzyme labelled anti antibodies pass through and come into contact with the substrate in the chamber. The resulting coloured product can be removed for visual examination.
