A mixture of methane with ethane and/or ethylene wherein the mole ratio of methane to C 2 hydrocarbon does not exceed 3: 1 is oxychlorinated with a gas containing molecular oxygen and a chlorine source which is chlorine and/or hydrogen chloride at 325‹ to 600‹ C. in the presence of a supported catalyst comprising copper chloride, potassium chloride and a third metal chloride in which the metal is neodymium, "didymium" cerium or zirconium, the catalyst containing a total of 1À5 to 35% by weight of the catalytic metals, calculated as free metal, based on the weight of the carrier. Products obtained are CCl 4 , CHCl 3 , C 2 Cl 4 and C 2 HCl 3 . |
