PURPOSE:To obtain the optimum fiber especially for a high output CO2 laser by forming a raw optical fiber larger in diameter than a finished fiber through cutting and grinding steps from high quality crystal source material, finishing the end faces, and polishing it to a desired diameter. CONSTITUTION:The optical fiber crystal source material of alkali halide type, such as KC or CsBr, a metal halide, such as AgCl, thallium type, or the like is cut, its outward circumference is ground by mechanical or chemical grinding to an about 1mm. diameter column to obtain a raw optical fiber. Its end faces are finished and the fiber is polished to an about 0.7mm. diameter optical fiber. As a result, since crystal diameter is not changed in the finished fiber from that in the starting raw material, and surface roughness is very five, an optical fiber unaffected by light diffusion and not causing absorption loss due to mixing of contaminants and optimum for use in a high output IR laser is obtained with good yield. |
