Acrylic/methacrylic acid (A/M) copolymer yield with 1-olefins (mono substd. ethylene) incorporated in cross-linked stoving enamels for high alkali resistance is increased to >95% by using them in form of the following reaction products; 6 - 22, pref. 6-14C olefin products (OP), result from heating with up to 10, pref. 0.5 - 6, partic. 1.4 - 5.6 wt.% with free radical forming polymerisation initiator, e.g. di-tert- butyl-peroxide (INI) and up to 10 wt.% of initiator decompsn. products, 1 - 60 wt.% non-volatiles determined at starting olefin mean distillation temp., or 250 degrees C, whichever is lower. Compsn. for A/M copolymsn. is (by wt.%) 1 - 30, pref. 8 - 15 or, 5 - 25 A/M amide, or hydroxy-ethyl, or propyl ether, 0 - 8 unsatd. mono-, or dicarboxylic acid, and to 100%: styrene, vinyltoluene, or A/M ester(s) with 1 - 10C aliphatic-, or cycloaliphatic mononoydric alcohol, and mixtures thereof. Further INI is added to monomer mix, pref. in stages. 0.02 - 2.0 wt.% w.r.t. monomers of cross-linkage promoter, e.g. tert. dodecylmercaptan may be included. |
