<p>The invention is concerned with novel dithioketal derivatives of 1-(2-aryl-2-oxoethyl)-1H-imidazoles and sulfones and sulfoxides derived therefrom, said compounds being useful as antimicrobial agents. These novel compounds may be represented by the formula: < IMG > (I), the possible stereochemically isomeric forms, the acid addition salts and the metal complexes thereof, wherein: R1 and R2 are each independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halo and methyl; R3 and R4 are each independently selected from the group consisting of C1-C6-lower alkyl and C3-C4-lower alkenyl, or R3 and R4 form, together with the sulfur atoms to which they are attached and the bridging carbon atom, a 5, 6 or 7-membered ring which is optionally substituted with 1 to 4 C1-C4-lower alkyl groups; R5 is a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, C1 C4-lower alkyl, 2-propenyl and 2-propynyl; and n is 0, 1 or 2.</p> |
