PURPOSE:To prevent the retention of moisture in a gap between interference fringes and the formation of a double image by directly forming a specular surface on a phase difference plate so as to leave no gap. CONSTITUTION:A liq. crystal 12 is sealed in the gap between glass sheets 11 each having an electrically conductive transparent film and a silicon oxide orienting layer on the inside to form a liq. crystal cell 13 of 1mm. thickness. One side of the cell 13 is coated with an antireflection layer 11a made of MgF2 or consisting of MgF2, ZrO2 and CeF3 in three layers, and a quarter-wave phase difference plate 14 of 0.2mm. thickness is stuck to the other side with an adhesive layer of 30mum thickness so that the optical axis of the cell 13 meets at 45 deg. angle with the optical axis of the plate 14. Al, Cr or Ag is deposited on the surface of the plate 14 not stuck to the cell 12 to 1,000-3,000Angstrom thickness to form a specular surface 15, and an epoxy resin film is formed on the surface 15 as a protective layer 16. |
