PURPOSE:To make sharp the threshold characteristics and to make possible high time-divided driving by crossing the orientation treatment directions of a pair of substrates having electrodes at 90 deg., crossing the orientations of liquid crystal molecules at <=90 deg. angle and crossing the absorption axes of polarizing plates at the angle narrower than the crossing angle of the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules. CONSTITUTION:The substrates 22, 23 having the upper and lower electrodes are disposed on the inside of the polarizing plates in such a manner that a prescribed space is maintained by a spacer 24. A nematic liquid crystal compsn. 25 is filled into the space formed of the spacer 24. A reflecting plate 27 is provided to the outside of the lower polarizing plate 26 in the case of forming the display device into reflection type structure. The electrodes are formed on the opposed surfaces of the substrates 22, 23 and are subjected to a prescribed orientation treatment. The crossing of the orienation of the compsn. 25 at >=90 deg. angle can be executed simply by crossing the orientation treatment directions of the substrates 22, 23 at <=90 deg.. For example, the substrate 22 is subjected to the orientation treatment in the direction of an arrow 28 from above to below and the substrate 23 is subjected to the orientation treatment in the direction of an arrow 29 from the right to the left so as to have 90 deg.-alpha (where alphais positive) open angle in the counter-clockwise direction. |
