Vapous phase prepn. of an olefinic acid or ester of formula (R)(R')C =C(R") COOR''' comprises contacting in the presence of molecular oxygen, a cpd. of formula (R)(R')CH-CH(R")COOR"' (where R-R"' are H or C1-4 alkyl) with a catalyst of formula (Mo)12(P)0.1 -3 (Cu)0.1- 2(V)0.1-2(X)0.01-2(M')s(O)b(I) (where M is K, Rb and/or Cs; X is Ba, La, Ga, Al, Ag, Cd, Ti, Tl, Hg, Pb and/or Zn; M' is Fe, Co, Ni, Sr, Mn, In, Ta, Sr, Mn, In, Ta, S and/or Be when a is above O ; a is 0-2 and b satisfies the valence requirements of the other elements).
