During the pressing to size of prepreg-insulated core parts of Roebel rods and two-layer formed coils before curing in a heating press, it is intended to prevent an air layer enclosed during winding also being pressed in and excess bonding resin being displaced in an uncontrolled and undirected manner when the press is being closed and in this case, in particular, during application of the compression pressure, by means of lateral compression plates (2, 2'), onto the broad sides of a conductor rod (6) of rectangular cross-section. To this end, the lateral compression plates (2, 2') are prebent in a resiliently elastic manner over their length towards the conductor rod (6). The pressing to size then takes place initially by applying a compression pressure onto the narrow sides of the core part of the conductor rod (6) until a predetermined height dimension is reached, and, subsequently thereto, by applying a pressure to the broad sides which initially (as a consequence of the prebent lateral compression plates (2, 2') acts only over the height of the centre of the broad sides and then builds up continuously towards the longitudinal ends of the broad sides until the core part is also compressed to a predetermined thickness dimension. <IMAGE>
