A workpiece changer which has two pairs of grippers serves to change the workpieces of a two-spindle lathe. This workpiece changer fetches unmachined parts from a magazine and exchanges them for the finished parts. The magazine contains seven unmachined parts. So that a drawer can nonetheless be completely emptied and filled with finished parts before the next drawer is used, the workpiece changer, after receiving the last pair of unmachined parts from a drawer, grips an unmachined part and a finished part with its two free grippers and deposits these parts in an intermediate deposit place. When the next drawer is approached, the workpiece changer fetches these different parts from the intermediate deposit place and deposits them in the next drawer after two unmachined parts have been removed beforehand. The method according to the invention enables drawers of a magazine which have an uneven number of deposit places to be filled completely with finished parts one after the other by means of a single workpiece changer after the unmachined parts have been removed beforehand in each case.
