4-Hydroxy-1,2-benzoisothiazole-3-(2H)-one-1,1-dioxide(I), used as a sweetening agent, is prepared from an aqueous solution of 3-amino- 1,2-benzoisothiazole-1,1-dioxide (II) by means of saponification with a base at a temp. range of 50≦̸C to boiling point of the solution, and decomposition of ether in the produced compd, where R1 = hydrogen atom; R1 = hydrogen atom; R2 = hydrogen atom or lower alkyl group; and R21 = hydrogen atom. Suitable salts of (I) are alkali metal, alkalline earth metal, or water-soluble nontoxic metal salts.
