PURPOSE:To manufacture rodlike carbon articles by calcination with little energy by arranging uncalcined rodlike carbon articles on a tray made of refractories, putting the tray in a heat resistant metallic container while filling a powdered filler into the space between the tray and the container, and passing the container through a calcining furnace. CONSTITUTION:When rodlike carbon articles such as carbon rods for dray cells are manufactured, coke or earthy graphite is kneaded with tar as a binder and extruded into rods. A large number of extruded rodlike carbon articles 6 are arranged on a tray 7 made of refractories in layers, and the tray 7 is put in a container 3 made of heat resistant steel such as stainless steel while filling a powdered filler 9 such as coke breeze or silica sand into the space between the tray 7 and the container 3. A lid 10 made of heat resistant steel is placed on the container 3 with gaps 11 for espacing gas generated during calcination. The container 3 is set on a truck 1 and passed through a calcining furnace consisting of a preheating zone, a heating zone and a cooling zone. The articles 6 are calcined at 800-1,000 deg.C maximum temp. to manufacture rodlike carbon articles. |
