A rigid neutron-shielding material is produced by joining together by continuous welding top, bottom, side and one end plates to form an open-ended box which is stood on end and filled with a powder mixt. of metal and a neutron absorbing B cpd. Repeated impacts are applied to the box during filling, and when complete the remaining end plate is placed in position abutting the filling and continuously welded into position. The composite ingot so formed is soaked at 800-850 degrees F before hot rolling at that temp. Pref. materials are B4C with Al, Mg or stainless powder for the filling, and a box of Al. Rolling should be sufficient to reduce the thickness to 1/30 of the original while leaving a casing of 0.01 inch thickness. After rolling the prod. may be flattened, as by heating a stack of the plates under a heavy wt.
|
