Chemical and/or physical processes in or involving fluid media are performed in a generally tubular vertical container made of sheet steel and internally coated with enamel. Down the length of the container are one or more internal ledges, covered by the enamel, and providing a seating for a loose insert such as a perforated plate, overflow plate or bubble lining. At each successive ledge the contaner is reduced in dia.. A seal may separate each ledge from its supported insert.
